Learn from the best
Doctors, world record holders and elite athletes — on one trainer team
Most cold plunge instructor trainings are built around a single personality and a single philosophy. Ours is not. We brought together medical professionals, Guinness World Record holders and cold exposure specialists so you learn the full picture — unbiased, evidence-led and without esotericism.
Budimir “Buda” Šobat

Four-time Guinness World Record holder — 4 hours 2 minutes in full-body contact with ice, in swim trunks. He shares his record preparation, biohacking routines and how to push past perceived limits safely.
Elina Mäkinen

Dr. med. Martje Sältz

Work through them in any order, at any pace. Every module is taught by the person best qualified to teach it.
01 BreathworkGuinness World Record holder · 24:37 breath-hold
Controlled breathing is what turns a cold shock into a controlled experience. You learn the techniques for before, during and after immersion — plus breathing tools for everyday stress.
- Breathing pattern, muscle activity, lung capacities — the mechanics of external and internal respiration and the role of the diaphragm.
- Regulating the nervous system — activating the parasympathetic branch to calm body and mind before entering the water.
- Hyperventilation and oxygenation — the O₂/CO₂ balance, safe breath-holding, and the zones you must never push participants into.
- Different technique, different experience — when to use which method to design a balanced workshop.
- Guided breathwork exercises — practical drills that build stamina in ice-cold water and resilience under everyday pressure.
02 Cold Exposure4× Guinness World Record holder · 4 h 2 min in ice
Cold exposure demands physical and mental preparation. Learn how a record holder builds both — and how to translate that into a safe progression for your clients.
- Physical foundations — nutrition, training, sleep and meditation as the base for cold adaptation.
- Mental foundations — mindset, resilience and reframing cold as a challenge rather than a threat.
- Overcoming the impossible — record preparation methods, and how to break through mental barriers while staying balanced.
03 MindsetIce mile world-class swimmer · −0.77 °C
Ice-cold water is mind over matter. Learn from a record-breaking ice swimmer how to exceed limits — yours and your participants’.
- Hormetic stress and adaptation — how controlled stressors trigger beneficial adaptation.
- The psychology of the comfort zone — why cold feels impossible, and how to rewire the response.
- Mind tricks that build resilience — visualisation, reframing, mental anchors, micro-challenges, grounding.
- How routines develop cold capacity — structuring rituals so tolerance compounds over time.
- From cold plunge to ice swimming — the physiological differences and safe methods before and after a swim.
04 Biohacking & HydrotherapySebastian Kneipp Academy
Sebastian Kneipp built a complete, natural system for strengthening body and mind 150 years before “biohacking” had a name. You get all five pillars, with hydrotherapy as a gentle on-ramp for clients who are not ready for ice.
- Hydrotherapy — alternating hot and cold applications, from arm baths to affusions, that stimulate circulation and immunity.
- Medicinal plants — teas, oils and compresses as everyday preventive tools.
- Nutrition — simple, seasonal, plant-forward eating that supports recovery.
- Movement — walking, stretching and barefoot work for vitality and mental freshness.
- Order of life — routines, rest and rhythm for stress regulation and emotional stability.
05 Medical InsightsPhysician, sports & naturopathic medicine
The science behind cold — so you can explain it, apply it and know exactly where the limits are.
- Temperature regulation & thermoreception — shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis, brown adipose tissue, skin sensors.
- Vasoconstriction and vasodilation — how blood flow adapts to cold and heat.
- Absolute and relative contraindications — cardiovascular disease, cold-induced asthma, Raynaud’s and how to screen for them.
- Health benefits — immune, cardiovascular, metabolic and mental effects, with the evidence behind them.
- Men vs. women in cold exposure — cycle and menopause considerations, and why protocols should differ.
- Time, temperature, frequency — dose-response, and the frequently asked medical questions your clients will bring you.
06 Safety & Emergency ResponseDoctor and former paramedic
Safety always comes first. This module is what separates a responsible instructor from an enthusiast with a tub.
- Recognising and responding to an emergency — cold shock, breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness.
- Checking vital functions — rapid assessment of airway and breathing.
- CPR and defibrillator use — correct chest compressions and rescue breathing in a cold-water context.
- Handling afterdrop — safe, gradual rewarming and the heat sources to avoid.
- Identifying and treating hypothermia outdoors — symptoms, staged response, and when to call emergency services.
07 Workshops, Business & MarketingFounder of Eisbaden.de · 20+ years
Knowing the science is half the job. This module is about filling your sessions and getting paid for them.
- Core components of cold exposure coaching — gradual exposure, technique, motivation, emotional support, assessing readiness.
- Planning and running a session — site selection, entry and exit, time limits, group dynamics, recovery.
- Safety briefings, disclaimers and consent — what to communicate, what to document, what to have in place.
- Building a cold plunge routine for clients — progression, goal-setting, rituals and retention.
- Build your cold plunge business — positioning, corporate and private formats, and target groups from athletes to beginners to women in menopause.

I had the opportunity to learn from instructors and trainers that are not only experts in the field, but have decades of experience in the practice. I feel confident sharing what I have learned with others.”

One well-filled workshop pays for the programme
A half-day cold plunge and breathwork workshop sells for €115–€129 per person across the German-speaking market, and $99–$249 in the US. We calculate conservatively with €120 — which means nine participants cover the entire €999 course fee.
9 × €120 = €1,080 — a single workshop with a full group already puts you ahead. Everything after that is profit.
1 workshop per quarter, 8 participants.
4 × 8 × €120 = €3,840. Achievable with almost no marketing — friends, your gym, a local swimming club.
1 workshop per month with 10 participants, plus 2 corporate sessions.
12 × 10 × €120 = €14,400, plus 2 × €1,000 = €16,400. Requires regular social posting and a few outreach calls.
2 workshops per month, 4 corporate sessions, 2 weekend retreats.
24 × 10 × €120 = €28,800, plus €4,000 corporate, plus 2 × €3,600 retreat margin = €40,000.
Where the numbers come from. €120 per person for a half-day group workshop is the conservative end of the market — comparable Wim Hof Method Fundamentals workshops in Germany and Austria are priced at €115–€129 for four to five hours, and US sessions run from $99 up to $249.
Corporate sessions. Hotels, gyms, physiotherapy practices and company health days typically book a flat rate of around €1,000 per session — one afternoon, one invoice, no per-head selling.
Retreats. A weekend retreat with 8 participants at roughly €900 each: about half covers accommodation and meals, leaving around €3,600 as your margin per retreat.
Not included above. Access to our cold plunge hardware shop — tubs, barrels and chillers — which you can resell to participants who want a cold routine at home, plus 1:1 coaching and follow-up programmes. And in many countries the course fee itself is tax-deductible as professional development.
These are illustrative example calculations based on typical market rates, not a promise of earnings. What you make depends on your market, your effort and your pricing.
FAQ
Questions about the instructor training
Who can join the Chief Ice Officer® program?
Cold plungers worldwide who want to become instructors and guide, motivate and support others. Ideally you already have some experience with cold exposure. If not, our experts take you through all the essentials and prepare you to lead informative, safe and effective sessions and events.
How long does the cold plunge instructor training take?
The PLAY programme consists of seven online modules with roughly 10 hours of expert knowledge. You are not tied to a fixed schedule and can complete the modules at your own pace and in any order. We recommend working through them within a relatively short period for the best learning experience.
Is the programme fully online, or is attendance required?
The Instructor Masterclass PLAY is 100% digital — no physical attendance required. You can complete it from home, from anywhere in the world. If you prefer live formats, the Instructor Masterclass LIVE and the winter retreat in Poland are available.
What makes this different from other cold plunge instructor courses?
Unlike other providers, we have assembled a team of doctors, world record holders, elite athletes and cold plunge and biohacking experts rather than building the training around a single personality or philosophy.
That means you get the most up-to-date, comprehensive knowledge on cold exposure plus practical tools to guide others — and, thanks to the 100% digital format, participants from all over the world become part of a growing international community.
Is there a final exam?
Not in the PLAY programme — there is no exam you have to submit. After completing the modules an optional online self-assessment is available so you can test your knowledge and round off your learning journey. The Instructor Masterclass LIVE does include an online exam with a practical component.
How long is my certificate of participation valid?
The Chief Ice Officer® certificate of participation does not expire. You receive it on completing all online modules and keep the title for as long as you want — no renewal fees.
What can I do after completing the programme?
Offer and lead workshops, retreats and events around cold plunge and breathwork; stand out from other coaches; market yourself using an internationally registered brand for cold exposure experts; and become part of an international instructor community. All activities are subject to our terms and conditions.
Can I join even if I don’t want to become an instructor?
Absolutely. Many participants are passionate cold plungers with no intention of coaching others — they join to learn from top-tier experts about cold exposure, breathwork and mindset. There are no prerequisites.
In which languages is the programme available?
English and German. If you are interested in another language option, get in touch — our trainers and participants come from many different countries.
Can I pay in instalments?
In many cases, yes. If paying the full fee at once is not an option, contact us by email or phone — we are confident we can find a suitable arrangement.
Is the course tax-deductible?
Course fees can often be claimed as tax-deductible expenses when they relate to a professional activity, such as working full-time or part-time as a coach or trainer. Please check your specific situation with your tax advisor. We provide an invoice and a certificate of completion to support this.
